Nearly a year after making the decision, months of looking, and weeks of fretting over this particular apartment, it is finally official: we have signed the contract and given our notice. Berlin will be our new home come December.
As much I complain about the process, we were actually quite lucky. We got the first apartment we applied for. Sure, we viewed a bunch, but we were picky, just waiting for the right one to come along. And it has. There are little things we wish were different, but the biggies - location, balcony, a third room for a home office - were all satisfied, and then some. I know we will be very happy there.
It doesn't look like much yet, as you can see, but the potential is what sold us. The management was also open to construction suggestions, as well as paint and tile preferences, and on a Berlin apartment, we knew how lucky this was. So essentially, we're kind of creating our urban dream home. Somehow, this is all supposed to be completed by mid-December, if not sooner, so we have a lot of work ahead of us: finding movers that don't cost an arm and a leg, ordering our first Ikea kitchen, not to mention selling half our belongings (lots of Pottery Barn furniture and designer clothes and shoes up for grabs!). Not sure those sleepless nights are entirely over, but now that we're that much closer to being settled, at least it is a bit more with excitement rather than worry.
So begins our Berlin adventure...
Ahhh, but then there's that view... (do you see it peeking out, Berlin's iconic landmark?)
Yahoo, congratulations! Sounds like patience definitely paid off. I hope the rest of the process goes as smoothly as possible. :) And I look forward to the "after" photos!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I've got big interior decorating plans for this place! Look forward to some major (obviously) changes... Now to just find some decently-priced movers!
DeleteWow! Congrats! Good choice, there is lot of potential in this apartment! Already excited to see what you will make off it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ana! It definitely has potential, which is what made us so excited. Well, that, and that balcony!
DeleteI love the room with all the windows! Can't wait to see your after photos. Good luck with everything!
ReplyDeleteThat room will actually be two rooms - the bedroom and the living room - once they fill in that open space at the end. The view of the lovely street, not to mention the killer balcony, is really what makes the space, I think.
DeleteGreat news! The apartment looks ace, and can't be far from where I work - Brunnenstrasse. When you arrive we should grab coffee or something!
ReplyDeleteThanks! That sounds great - we're just on the other side of Schönhauser Allee, so not far at all. Here's hoping for a mild December...
DeleteExciting! Try to get some sleep. You're going to be busy once you two move in!
ReplyDeleteHa! I plan on doing nothing but sleeping when we move in - for a good week! After coordinating all the painters, the kitchen installation and the actual move (across the country and up three flights of stairs), I think I will be all tapped out for awhile. OK, and after I get a Christmas tree. ;)
DeleteCongrats and so exciting - can't wait to see what you do with the place. I love all those windows!
ReplyDeleteThat's so exciting! Congrats! Finding our apartment in Nürnberg has been the only easy thing about this move. :)
